New Shower Glass Protection: A Guide for Glass Installers

You measured it, fabricated it, and installed it square. The glass is clear, the hardware is tight, and the seams look right. Then it sits in a house where the water is turned on a few days later, and the first hard look the owner gives your work is through a film of spots.

If you install shower glass, how it looks three months after your install is part of your reputation. Protection is one way to look after that.

Why new glass spots in the first place

Glass looks smooth, but water doesn't sheet off it cleanly. Droplets sit, dry, and leave behind whatever was in them: minerals, soap residue, and body products. Repeat that every morning and you get spotting, buildup, and a cloudy look that gets harder to remove the longer it sits.

How fast it happens depends on the water. Portland's Bull Run supply is generally soft. Many suburbs, Vancouver and Clark County systems, and private wells vary, and some are harder. So glass you install in Lake Oswego and glass you install on a well outside Vancouver, WA may age differently.

But no water prevents it altogether. Mineral spotting and soap scum build up on unprotected glass with any water.

What a protective seal does

Diamond Bond Oregon has been sealing, protecting, and restoring glass and stone surfaces for over 25 years. The shower glass treatment creates an invisible barrier that repels water, with protection against hard-water spotting, mineral buildup, and cloudiness. Less sticking means less to clean, and less maintenance for the owner.

You can see the details on the shower glass sealing page.

The best time: after install and final clean

For new construction, the window is after the final clean and before the walkthrough or move-in. The glass is installed, wiped down, and unused. Nobody has showered yet.

That is the cleanest starting point for a seal, and the one with the least work. Diamond Bond coordinates with the builder's schedule, so there is no need for you to be there or to hold up your own close-out.

How glass companies work with a sealing partner

Some installers include sealing as part of the shower package. Others recommend it to the builder or the homeowner. Both approaches make sense, and either way, a partner means you are not guessing about how to handle it.

Diamond Bond has worked with glass and shower companies, including Customline Shower Company and Heritage Glass. We understand the trade, your schedule, and your interest in protecting your work.

Ways installers use this:

  • Offer it as an add-on at quote time, so the customer chooses protection with the glass.
  • Recommend it to the builder so it is built into the closing checklist.
  • Refer the homeowner when someone asks how to keep new glass clear.

Take care of the aftercare

Protection is stronger when the owner knows how to clean it. Send them to Diamond Bond's cleaning instructions, and note that the Diamond Bond Cleaner & Revitalizer is the retail product for maintaining sealed surfaces.

A shower that stays clear is your best advertisement. A shower that clouds up in a few months can come back to you as a complaint, even when the glass was installed perfectly.

What to tell the customer

Installers are often the last trade the homeowner meets before the shower gets used. That makes you the person they ask, "How do I keep this clean?"

Having a straight answer helps. Something like this works:

  • The glass can be sealed to repel water and resist spotting and buildup.
  • Sealing is best done when the glass is new and clean, before it has been used.
  • Sealed glass generally takes less upkeep, but it still needs regular cleaning with the right products.

Keep it honest. Sealing does not make glass maintenance-free, and a customer who is told otherwise will be unhappy when they find a spot. A realistic expectation is a better outcome for everyone, including you.

It also helps to give the customer a name and number. Diamond Bond's number is 503-998-4007, and the estimate form is easy to share. That way the customer has somewhere to turn that is not your phone.
